2011 Beach Patrol Captain John "Jay" I. McDonough

 

John "Jay" I. McDonough II, 52, known by his family as "Jay-Bird", passed away in 2011. He suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in a department training exercise.

After years of being a lifeguard serving on Volusia County’s beaches. Jay become a member of the Volusia County Beach Patrol where he served for 13 years as a Police Officer and ATV trainer. Shortly before his death he was promoted to Captain.

He owned the business, J-Mac Industries, Inc. producing all-terrain wheelchairs that he sold to parks and beaches all over the United States. The chairs giving those with physical limitations the opportunity to enjoy beaches, parks and rural sites.

Jay and his son built each chair by hand. In 2010 he organized the First Annual "Run For Those Who Can't" 5k on Daytona Beach, raising funds in order to provide more motorized wheelchairs for Volusia County beaches.

He is survived by his wife Judy and son Darrell.
