2005 NSB Officer Roy Lundell Nelson, Jr.

Police Officer Roy Nelson, aged 36 of New Smyrna Beach was killed in an automobile accident while out on patrol. A seven-year veteran with the New Smyrna Beach Police Department, Officer Nelson served as a bicycle officer, a member of the SWAT team, and for two years as a K-9 handler.

Officer Nelson and his canine partner, Caesar, were responding to a burglary call while traveling in New Smyrna on State Road A1A just east of the South Causeway, when a pick-up truck pulled out from Richmond Drive. When Officer Nelson tried to avoid a collision, his patrol car hit a guardrail and overturned. Officer Nelson and K-9 Caesar both died from their injuries.

The Volusia 100 Club had only been established a few weeks at the time of his death, but we quickly raised the money necessary to help provide for his family. He is survived by his wife Angie and two children.
